Information

The Custom Audinc Fly is our custom-made flight earplug with a genuine pressure-regulating filter: it lets cabin pressure reach your ear canal with a delay, giving your Eustachian tube more time to equalise during descent. At the same time it cuts engine and turbine noise by 29 dB while conversations and announcements stay intelligible. Made of soft silicone in the colour of your choice from an impression of your ear, and certified as hearing protection.

✈️ Custom Audinc Fly – custom flight earplugs with a pressure-regulating filter

Where ordinary flight earplugs mainly reduce noise, the Custom Audinc Fly carries a pressure-regulating filter: a small metal tube halfway along the canal of the plug, with only a 0.3 millimetre opening on the outside. Through that precisely calibrated opening the pressure change in the aircraft reaches your ear with a delay. That tackles the two things that make flying tiring: the noise and the pressure. An aircraft cabin easily sits at 80 to 85 dB(A) for hours. The Fly removes 29 dB of that engine and turbine noise but lets speech through: you follow conversations and hear the announcements. The plug is made of soft silicone from an impression of your ear and is certified as personal protective equipment (Regulation (EU) 2016/425). Ideal for frequent flyers, cabin crew and pilots, and for anyone who feels that stabbing pressure in the ears on every descent. If you are looking for earplugs for flying that really do something about air pressure and ear pain, this is the plug we recommend.

How the pressure filter works during climb and descent

Custom Audinc Fly — How the pressure filter works during climb and descent
During descent the cabin pressure rises to ground pressure in about 25 minutes. Your middle ear has to keep up through the Eustachian tube; if it cannot do so fast enough, the eardrum is pushed inwards and you feel pressure or pain. The metal tube in the Fly lets air through only a 0.3 mm opening and so strongly restricts the airflow into your ear canal. As a result the pressure behind the plug rises more slowly than in the cabin: the calculated pressure rise is stretched from 25 to 40 minutes. Your Eustachian tube gets almost twice as much time to equalise in small steps — swallowing, yawning or chewing then works far more easily. The filter is purely mechanical and works without a battery or electronics. The tube is fixed in the custom plug and does not need replacing; choose a transparent plug and you can see it halfway along the canal.

How to use the Fly during your flight

- Descent (the phase that causes most complaints): insert the earplugs about 45 minutes before landing, well before the aircraft starts descending. Leave them in until you are on the ground and the doors are open. - Climb: if you also have complaints on take-off, insert the plugs before departure and remove them about 30 minutes after take-off. - Whole flight: you may also leave them in for the entire flight for the quiet — with 29 dB of attenuation you sleep more easily and arrive more rested. Twist the plug slightly backwards when inserting so it seals completely; only a fully sealing plug can regulate pressure. After the flight, clean them with a damp cloth or our cleaning spray and store them in the case.

What the filter does and does not do about ear pain

To be honest: the pain on descent arises in your middle ear, behind the eardrum. No earplug reaches there. What the Fly does is slow down the pressure change that arrives at your eardrum, so your body gets more time to equalise by itself. For most travellers that means noticeably less pressure sensation and less pain; if your Eustachian tube works well, you will mainly notice the quiet. 👉 Do not use earplugs with an ear infection, with grommets, with a perforated eardrum or shortly after ear surgery. If you have a heavy cold or sinusitis, even a pressure-regulating filter cannot remove the complaints — consult your GP first.

The attenuation is fairly even across the frequencies, with the emphasis on the high tones. The hiss of the air conditioning and the whine of the turbines disappear, while voices (mid) come through relatively well. For comparison: the Pure Tones Flying offers a choice from SNR 10 to 23 dB; the Fly sits above that at 29 dB.

Material, colour and versions

The Fly is made of soft, skin-friendly silicone of 40 Shore A. The material flexes with your ear canal, even when it changes shape as you chew or talk — important for a plug that stays in for hours and must seal completely to regulate pressure. You choose from every colour of our soft silicone, from transparent to neon. Choose transparent and you can see the metal filter tube halfway along the canal; with an opaque colour only the 0.3 mm opening shows on the outside and the Fly looks like an ordinary earplug. You also choose the version: - Flat finish: canal model without handle, barely visible in the ear. - Mini grip: canal model with a small handle, easier to remove. - Grips: concha model that fills the whole outer ear, with handle — the most secure fit, also for sleeping. Your impression is scanned, the plug is constructed digitally and 3D-printed, post-cured and hand-finished. The pressure filter is then fitted and every plug is checked.

Frequently Asked Questions

General
How do I clean them and how long do they last? +
After every flight wipe them with a damp cloth or our cleaning spray and let them dry in the case. Do not use alcohol or solvents. A custom plug in soft silicone lasts for years in normal use; we give 2 years warranty on the material and 6 months comfort guarantee on the fit.
Custom Audinc Fly
Does the Custom Audinc Fly help against ear pain when flying? +
That is what it is made for. The pressure-regulating filter stretches the pressure rise on descent from 25 to 40 minutes, giving your Eustachian tube more time to equalise. Most travellers notice clearly less pressure sensation and pain. The pain itself arises in the middle ear, which no earplug can reach, so we do not promise "never ear pain again" — and with an ear infection, grommets or a heavy cold this filter will not help either.
When do I put the earplugs in and take them out? +
For descent: in about 45 minutes before landing, and out only once you are on the ground. If you also have complaints on take-off, insert them before departure and remove them half an hour after take-off. You may also simply leave them in for the whole flight.
How much noise do they cut and can I still hear the announcements? +
The Fly attenuates 29 dB (SNR), with 26 dB in the low and mid tones and 29 dB in the high tones. Engine and turbine noise largely disappears, but voices come through: conversations with your neighbour and the announcements stay intelligible.
What is the difference from the Pure Tones Flying? +
The Pure Tones Flying is first and foremost a noise reducer with a linear filter containing a membrane; you choose the strength (SNR 10–23 dB) and the colour. The Fly is built around pressure regulation: its filter was specifically developed to slow the pressure change, and the attenuation is stronger (29 dB). If pressure pain is your main complaint, choose the Fly; if you mainly want quiet with lots of choice, the Pure Tones Flying.
Can I sleep with them on the plane? +
Yes. The 29 dB attenuation makes the cabin noticeably quieter and the soft silicone is comfortable, even with your head against the window or headrest. If you want the version that stays put best, choose the grips (concha model). Do insert the plugs before you fall asleep — then they are already in when the aircraft starts to descend.
Are they suitable for children? +
From about 6 years of age we make custom earplugs for children too, including the Fly. Has your child had grommets, an ear infection or recent ear surgery? Then consult your GP first.
Can you see the filter? +
Only with a transparent plug: then you can see the metal tube halfway along the canal. With a coloured plug only a 0.3 mm opening shows on the outside, so from the outside the Fly looks like an ordinary custom earplug.
Does the filter need replacing? +
No. The pressure filter is a metal tube fixed in the custom plug that works without a battery or electronics. Keep the plug clean and check now and then that the 0.3 mm opening on the outside is free of earwax; it will then keep working for years. If you see damage to the plug or filter, drop by — we will take a look.
How is the Fly made and how long does it take? +
At Audinc we take an impression of your ears in 20 minutes. It is scanned, the plug is digitally constructed and 3D-printed in soft silicone. The pressure filter is then fitted and every plug is checked. Allow about 15 working days; you collect the plugs or we ship them to you.
What are the best earplugs for ear pain when flying? +
Earplugs that only reduce noise do nothing against ear pain: that comes from the pressure difference during climb and descent. If you want earplugs for flying that really do something about the air pressure, choose a plug with a pressure-regulating filter such as the Custom Audinc Fly. Because it is custom-made it seals completely, which is the only way the filter works, and it stays comfortable for hours.
Do earplugs help against air pressure on a plane? +
An ordinary earplug does not: it simply lets the pressure change through. The Custom Audinc Fly has a metal filter tube with a 0.3 mm opening that slows the airflow into your ear canal. The pressure behind the plug therefore rises in 40 minutes instead of 25, giving your Eustachian tube time to keep up.
