Universal earplugs (like Alpine) or custom-made?
Universal earplugs like those from Alpine, or custom earplugs after all? An honest comparison: when universal is enough and when the fit makes the difference.
Take the next step for your hearing
If you search for “Alpine earplugs”, you’re probably looking for affordable hearing protection that you can simply pick up at the chemist. Makes sense. But the question behind it is usually a different one: is a universal earplug like that good enough for what I’m going to use it for? In this article we compare them honestly: without made-up test figures and without running down a brand that simply does good work. And because Alpine also makes custom earplugs itself, we compare those with ours further down.
What you get with a universal earplug
Alpine is a Dutch brand and one of the best-known names in universal hearing protection. Universal means the earplug is made in a limited number of standard sizes and has to fit as many ears as possible. You buy them at the chemist or online, they cost a fraction of a custom earplug, and many models have an interchangeable filter, so you choose how much sound you let through.
That’s an honest product with a clear place. If you’re at a festival without hearing protection, a universal earplug from the vending machine is far better than nothing. Don’t underestimate that: the worst hearing protection is the hearing protection you don’t have with you.
When is universal simply enough?
There are situations in which a custom earplug gives you little extra. Feel free to choose universal if:
- you wear hearing protection a few times a year: one festival, New Year’s Eve, a job in the shed;
- you first want to try whether you’re comfortable with it at all;
- you need them today and can’t wait for production;
- you tend to lose things and don’t want an expensive set in your coat pocket;
- you’re buying them for someone else, or for children who are still growing.
For those moments, universal isn’t the cheap emergency solution, but simply the right choice.
Where the fit starts to pinch
Ear canals differ enormously: in diameter, in bends, and the left is often different from the right. A universal earplug solves that with a shape that approximates the average ear. As long as you wear it briefly, you hardly notice. With daily or long wear, three things come up.
Pressure points
What feels fine after ten minutes can ache after four hours. An earplug that’s slightly too big for your ear canal always presses on the same spot. The result is predictable: you take it out halfway through the shift or the concert, and that’s exactly when you’re unprotected.
Leaking past the edge
Attenuation stands or falls with the seal. If there’s a small gap somewhere between the earplug and the wall of your ear canal, sound simply goes past it, however good the filter is. A custom earplug is made from the impression of your ear, so that leakage around the edge isn’t there.
Staying in place
Jaw movements, talking, chewing, putting a helmet on and off: a universal earplug slowly works its way out because of them. You push it back without thinking, and in the meantime your protection is less than you think.
Per situation: what matters more?
Festival and concert. Going once a year? Universal is enough. At events for several days every season, or playing yourself? Then the fit wins, and so does the sound. Also read how loud a festival is and see our festival earplugs or, if you make music, the options at hearing protection for music.
Sleeping. This is where the difference is felt fastest. You lie on your side for seven hours, with your ear in the pillow. You won’t last a night with an earplug that sticks out or presses. Our sleeping earplugs are made of soft silicone and don’t stick out beyond your outer ear.
Work. Eight hours a day, five days a week. Here comfort isn’t a luxury but a condition: hearing protection that you take off doesn’t protect. For hearing protection at work we also recommend a leak test when it’s first used and periodically after that, preferably every year. Our leak test is made for custom earmoulds; other fit tests exist for universal earplugs.
Motorbike. There’s hardly any room under the helmet. An earplug that doesn’t sit flat in your ear canal gets pushed in by the cheek pads, or worked loose when you take your helmet off.
Swimming. Here it’s not about sound but about water. A universal earplug keeps most water out; a custom earplug really seals your ear canal, which matters if you’re prone to swimmer’s ear.

The biggest difference is in the filters and the way you get fitted. The MusicSafe has three linear filters that you change yourself. With us you choose between a flat filter, for the most natural sound, and a tube filter with stronger attenuation, and with the Custom Music also between soft and hard material; what difference that makes, you can read in hard or soft custom earplugs. And with us you start with a free appointment, in which we first look in your ears and you only choose after that. How that appointment goes, you can read in fitting earplugs: how it works.
Work it out per year
Universal earplugs cost little per pair, but you replace them: they break, you lose them, or the foam goes hard. Our custom earplugs start at €99 incl. VAT (the Custom Porto, for two-way radio earpieces). Sleeping and swimming earplugs cost €119.95, motorcycle and music earplugs €128.95. That includes at least 2 years’ warranty, a 6-month comfort guarantee and a free filter change within 3 months of delivery, and after four years we check them free of charge.
If you wear them twice a year, that investment is hard to justify. If you wear them every working day or every night, the price per hour of wear quickly drops below that of universal earplugs you keep buying. And you get comfort on top. You’ll find a worked example per year in cheap earplugs, and what you get from us for that money in value for money of earplugs.

At this rate of use, disposable earplugs stay cheaper. You would then choose custom mainly for comfort and a better seal.
We assume a lifespan of 4 years (with good care they last four to five years). Filters, cleaning products and repairs are not included. Prices incl. VAT.
Still not sure?
If you’re in doubt, feel free to start with universal earplugs. If after a few months you notice you take them out because they press, or that you still hear too much, then you know exactly why custom hearing protection exists.
The fitting is free with us and taking the impression itself is done in a few minutes. We first take a quick look in your ears, discuss what you use the earplugs for and give honest advice, even if that means your current earplugs are perfectly fine.

For occasional use, universal earplugs are a fine choice. The difference with custom earplugs is not the brand but the fit: a universal earplug is made in standard sizes, a custom earplug from an impression of your ear canal.
A universal earplug has to fit as many ears as possible and comes in a few standard sizes. A custom earplug is made from a silicone impression of your own ear canal, so it only fits your ear. You notice that most with long wear: no pressure points, no sound leaking past the edge and an earplug that stays in place.
If you wear them a few times a year: one festival, New Year's Eve, a job in the shed, a flight. Universal is also the logical choice if you first want to try whether hearing protection suits you, or if you need it today. If you wear them every week or for hours at a time, the fit starts to matter more.
