My hearing is already damaged, are earplugs any use?
Yes. In fact, wearing earplugs will keep your hearing from getting further damaged.
Impaired hearing can have several causes. However, when hearing damage occurs, it is the result of dead cilia in the ear. Each person possesses thousands of cilia that slowly wear out during aging. However, regular exposure to excessively loud noise can accelerate this wear. In other words, the more often you come into contact - unprotected - with noise, the worse your hearing will become.
Wearing earplugs can prevent further cilia from being damaged. Of course, one will still lose cilia over the years, but proper hearing protection can slow this process considerably.
As far as we are concerned, having hearing damage is even more reason to wear hearing protection.
Should you already suffer from hearing damage and fear that you will not hear enough with earplugs in, it is always possible to choose a lighter filter.
